Disc herniations are an injury that affects the intervertebral discs in your back or neck. It is usually associated with significant pain and problems with movement, especially at first. The disc is a fibro-cartilaginous structure that sits between the vertebrae in your spine. It is incredibly strong and flexible, but it does suffer and get injured in a number of circumstances. The known risk factors for disc injuries include fatigue, weight gain, smoking, repetitive injury, and sedentary activities. Disc injuries are also most common in middle age.

A herniated disc often comes on after a string of smaller back sprains and injuries. It can also come after growing stiffness in the back, especially first thing in the morning. It can be incredibly painful at first. Patients often go to the hospital, only to be sent away after a scan and some pain-killing drugs.

At Sydney Health Professionals, our experienced Osteopaths commonly see people with acute disc herniations. Osteopathic treatment can help with pain and increasing movement, and we will walk you through a full assessment to accurately diagnose your disc injury. We will also often work with massage, acupuncture or podiatry once the acute stage has eased to help promote a full recovery.

We will help you through the acute pain of the first week and guide your recovery and return to strenuous activity.  Get in touch with the clinic today to see about getting help with a painful back injury, or to help someone who is struggling with one.
