Cranial Osteopathy

A safe and gentle form of Osteopathy treatment

Cranial osteopathy was developed by Dr Sutherland, one of Dr Still’s first students, from consideration of the dis-articulated skull. His work hypothesis provided a way to treat head injuries and the base of spine through the outer covering of the nervous system and inherent movements present in each of us.

Dr Sutherland extended his work to the entire body by considering the ligaments and connective tissues. The majority of work in the clinic utilises this approach. Cranial procedures are frequently used in adult presentations such as jaw (TMJ) pain. Neck pain and headaches are common symptoms accompanying dysfunction of the jaw.

It takes many years for the osteopath to make this a reliable tool and requires continual skill improvement. Craniosacral therapy is a very simple, and far from complete, form of the osteopathic process and can be performed by unregistered practitioners.
